What is PowerShell ?

Next to the What shell?  discussion : Dueling Command Lines in Windows Server 2008

As you also could see in the Channel 9 video , Windows PowerShell: Origin and Future , with Bruce Payette's opinion about what PowerShell really is.

There is an active and lengthy discussion going on about what PowerShell now actualy is ?

, very nice to follow :

and Jeffrey Snovers opinion on the PowerShell team blog :

Shell or Scripting Language – It’s Shimmer!

For me about 90 % of the PowerShell work is in the interactive shell using onliners, variables and REPL to prototype and do day to day tasks.

Only a small percentage makes it into a script, so PowerShell is more a Shell as a scripting language for me, but also I mostly prefer using .NET classes above Cmdlets, and as I am a consultant I have an IT Pro, not a developer background.

What is PowerShell for you ?

Enjoy,

# re: What is PowerShell ?

Hello,

First, just want to say that I really enjoy the site MOW ..  Lot's of great information, a very valuable resource.

Powershell has allowed me to learn a lot about the .NET framework and it's associated classes without having to install the full blown Visual Studio.  Also, it has been very easy to automate various tasks (monitoring, drawing charts, etc.) ... I use it more as a scripting language than shell, but the interactive nature of authoring scripts is imho, the biggest advantage.
